Foundations of Goal Setting: Identify Your Goals

With such a big list of aspirations and changes to make, it is easy to hold off making any decision on where to start to the point that no goals are set. But since you are here, that isn’t happening to you, oh no, 2021 is going to be the year.

Start by exploring whether anything can be grouped into categories or themes. This will make it easier to clarify your goal and the steps you might need to get to it.

Now let’s start to build a timeline – when you would like to accomplish these things by? Put a 1, 3, or 5 against each one as an estimate as to how many years you want to take to achieve these goals. I know, it seems a big task but, again, don’t get overwhelmed. Let your dreams take over for a while and let the detail come later. If something feels like it might be longer than 5, then make this a 5+.

Find Your Future

To find some clarity, let’s have a look into the future. In five years time, you are walking down the street and you see someone you last saw five years ago. They ask you what’s going on with you – you look so happy!

How do you answer? What would you like to be telling them? What brings a smile to your face just thinking about it?

Find the items on the list that are going to contribute to that happy future and mark these with a star and add your timeframe.

Pick ’em!

Now’s for the bit you’ve been waiting for. From your list choose up to three goals that you think will have the most impact on your long term vision and focus on those for the next few steps of this exercise.

TODAY’S ACTION

Review your list and determine your desired timeline for achievement.

Until next time, remember, if the excess baggage is weighing you down, you can always leave it in lost luggage.

Best wishes,
