7 Small Habits to Improve Concentration

This technological age makes it necessary for us to try and find ways to improve our concentration. Whether you are trying to build a business, be creative or contribute to a bigger organisation, there is always the draw of notifications and the internet to take us away from what we really find to be important to us. Yes, we can put systems in place for turning off notifications or using an app to block access to social media. Yet it can be difficult to shut off other things so easily as our brains are used to having so much bombarding it.

Let us, then, focus on the small habits we can introduce to gain a little control of our mindset, rather than the world around us.

Make Your Bed

Making your bed in the morning seems such a trivial thing. However, it is the first step to being able to remain focused for the rest of the day. Firstly, you have proved to yourself that you can accomplish something. Secondly, it can remove that apathy that you might feel. You may look at the bed and think “I’ll do it later”, but if you do it now, it gives you more impetus to do the next thing that needs doing. Finally, it can give you enhanced mental clarity as you can walk into that room and see everything in order. Tidy room, tidy mind, right?

Keep Your Workspace Tidy

Just like making your bed can help to keep a clear mind, having a clear working space can also help to create a peaceful mindset before starting work. Being consistent with the place you work can also be useful, whether that is at a hot desk in an office, a coffeeshop or your home office. Being consistent can create familiarity and enable your brain to associate that space with work rather than play.

Take A Break

We need to get on with the deep work but we also need to know that there is a point at which concentration and focus can start to diminish no matter how well you have set yourself up for it. Sometimes it can be useful to get out of the space where we are perhaps starting to see an overload in information or intensity. Taking a walk or making a cup of tea can often help to generate new thoughts. Even talking it out loud to a colleague or family member, even if they don’t understand, can bring new solutions to problems.

Have A Schedule For Regular Tasks

So you’re sitting there and thinking that you need to get the washing done for your weekend away. If you always have a set day for doing the washing, then you can put that thought to one side and get on with what you are doing.

If that doesn’t work for you, then perhaps this next tip will.

Keep A Notebook To Hand

If you keep a notebook in your workspace, you can quickly jot down anything that comes to mind. Need to buy cat food? Jot it down and get back to your work. Need to follow up with a customer or colleague? Stick it on the list.

Doing this means that it is out of your head and can be dealt with later. You no longer have to worry about forgetting to do it because it’s right there on that list for you to deal with at an appropriate time, either as part of a daily review or weekly planning session.

Do A Weekly “Brain Dump”

Whilst I don’t like the urban connotations of this phrase, undoubtedly it is a useful tool in enabling focus and concentration. Getting all your thoughts, tasks and to-dos on a list on a weekly basis can free the mind up to think about the things that matter. When it is all out of your head you can schedule the things that matter. Then throw the list away even if you have things on that you haven’t scheduled. If it isn’t important enough to schedule, then maybe it isn’t important enough to have on a list.

Create A Routine

Finding the appropriate time for you to do your best work is the only way to ensure that your concentration is at its peak. If this is first thing in the morning, then make sure that you build your morning routine around this. Morning routines need to fit your life, not the other way around. You don’t have to do meditation and yoga if that time is more useful to you get on with creating.
